Rehabilitating Water Wells
Lots of hand dug water wells were dug in the 1980,s across Zambia. Unfortunately these wells are now in need of repair and cleaning out. Not many communities have been successful in maintaining their wells. You need good equipment, the knowledge of how to do it and material.
African Community Project has a long list of communities requesting that their wells be refurbished. Our facilitators will select communities in dire need of help with the water supply as funding becomes available. A time is then set up when the Well technician will come and do the work. In the meantime the facilitator will have worked with the community on forming a water committee and educating them on the need to keep their water safe. The community is responsible to supply sand, stone and bricks needed in any wellhead and apron repairs. Labour other than the well Technician and helper come from the community. African Community Project supplies the needed cement, tools and rebar brought to the well site as well as the food that the crew working on the well will need. The woman of the village does the cooking and provides a place for the Well Technician and helper to stay while working on the well. The well is cleaned out and addition depth is dug to compensate for the falling water table; usually one or two meters.
