DRESCRIPTION:
I started helping Nsenya School when I first arrived in Petauke in 2002; the program I was working on brought some seedlings to be planted around the school. When we had planted the trees, the Head Teachers Benson Pheri told me that the pump on the well was broken so the pupils would have to carry the water quite a distance; this is were it all began, I paid to have their Mark III pump repaired. Then I contributed to the community's share of a budget to have the classrooms rebuilt. One day while sitting chatting with the teachers, they told me they would like to be able to offer grade eight to the community, but had no books to do so. On April 7th 2003, I returned from Lusaka 400 kilometers away, on my Honda 125 with a US mailbag full of books tied on the back. From there I thought everything would be fine, but the students are required to pay school fees for grade eight and few of the parents could pay, I don't have to tell you how it was paid.
The school is located in the centre of an area in Chief Nyamphande's Chiefdom, it is at this school that students from the far villages come and stay during the week and return home on Fridays, they bring their own food and blankets. The girls sleep in an old tool shed and the boys outside, they cook for themselves outside. When Maria, my wife visited the school with me, she was shown this, and on her way back to Canada she stopped to see her sister in Germany, telling her story to Anna and her husband Bernd. For his 40th birthday in November of 2003, his family and friends gave him over 800 euros to start the girls' dormitory. In November 2004, I bought and delivered the lumber for the roof, which was supposed to have been supplied by the community, but they had sold the lumber to a charity to build a church. At least the village made some money to buy food, anyway the roof will be on the dormitory before the rains. All it needs now is doors and windows to be secure. Bunk beds would be nice, so would a boys dorm; I could go on and on.
