Felix has rode his new bike into Petauke today and mailed 500,000 Leucaena and 5,000 Moringa seeds to Fred at Mbulumo Community Forest outside Kasama.

Felix at Mumbi Community Forests got a new bike this week. He has totally worn the old one out. It is not worth repairing and it is almost a year old.

Growing Moringa

This Moringa tree was planted in the tree nursery in December and now has been planted out in the moringa orchard and is over one meter high and only four months old.

SEED COLLECTION

Felix our Facilitator at Mumbi Village has started collecting Jatropha seeds for the 2012 growing season. So far he has bought 1500kg or about 2.5 million seeds. They will be stored, packaged and distributed across Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe to our Community Forests ready for planting. Already there is a waiting list from our community nurseries for seeds that will be planted as soon as they get them. The transport and distribution budget will need to be found quickly. Anyone interested to contribute to this will be most welcome!

Time is moving very quickly and I am in Canada working away on things to keep the program growing. (A bit of a pun!) It is very reassuring that the project is going along very nicely. My colleagues in Zambia are doing a great job and it is up to me to find funding to keep them going. A task I am not very good at. I have a hard time asking for money. I am very happy to say that our approach of taking these communities beyond charity is working. We are planting lots of trees for the future and it is paying off. Communities are approaching us continually and becoming part of the program. It is a great feeling! They look after the trees they help plant them, they learn about climate change, the uses of the trees they are planting and for that we award them with school supplies, well repairs, basic health medicines and other things they cannot afford. We are partners with them in this endeavour. The photo is of me at Queens Hills Hotel where I stay while in Livingstone.

I am happy to report that our new Society, North to South Community Projects is up and running here in Canada. I give my first presentation on sustainable forestry at Camosun College this week.
