Petauke Community Forests is in Petauke District, Eastern Province of Zambia. It takes in the whole of Chief Nyamphande, Chief Sandwe and Chief Mumbi Chiefdoms. PCF is in the process of becoming a Society under the laws of Zambia. The main goal for its creation is to empower the people and take control of their environment and also strive for a sustainable lifestyle from agro forestry. With climate change and global warming taking center stag the community is also concerned about their own well being. With added incomes from growing trees used for bio fuels and perhaps carbon credits they will not only improve their own lifestyles but that of the whole community mainly: schooling, health and badly needed infrastructure.
Petauke Community Forests is already moving forward with a reforestation program and equipping the community schools with blackboards and supplies. There are almost 50 community schools in PCF and about 10,000 pupils in grades 1 to 4; already 26 blackboards have been put in the schools, for some this is their first blackboards. The Environment Coordinator is creating tree nurseries at the schools planting Moringa, Leucaena, and many indigenous species; these nurseries are looked after by the students, teachers and interested villagers. We have 3 million Jatropha seeds in storage ready to go into the ground in September, these trees are used to produce bio diesel, they. They will start producing in two years.
