One Week

22 Nov 2008 11:54 am

I am now just over a week here in Zambia. Rains have come early this year. This could be a good thing or a very bad thing. If they continue the crops that are already in the ground will have a head start to a long growing season. However if they (the rains) stop for some reason the new maize that has already sprouted will wither and die. I have seen this happen before, although I have a good feeling about this year’s rainy season. Good luck to you substance farmers.
It seems that our truck always gets abused while I am not here. Broken springs, blown head gaskets, blown tires. The list is endless. Lost ignition keys; it now starts with a screwdriver jammed into the ignition. What can you do, just smile and try to explain to them preventive maintenance, costs, and no I am not rich!
Hopefully a few bags of tree seeds will get moved into the villages this coming week.
My breathing or should I say lack of breathing tires me out very quickly and I have no energy.

I am off!

11 Nov 2008 01:03 am

I am heading out tomorrow. It is a very long trip London, Addis Abba, Malawi and than Zambia. I will arrive in the afternoon of the 13th. I have been told my room awaits me. I will see how I feel (this lung thing slows me down and I require more rest than I used to need). Also what appointments Geoff has for me, and than off to Petauke.
My luggage is still over the weight limit so I have to go through it one more time and get rid of something; but what! Everything in there is needed.
I will try a little magic!
Please keep reading this blog and I will try to post when I can get a signal on my Cell phone which is now connected to the Internet in Zambia. Send us an email and say hello to the crew!
I would also like to thank all Veterans for your sacrifices and give remembrance to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice

ELECTIONS

04 Nov 2008 08:47 pm

Today will mark the third election in a month that will affect my work in Zambia. The 300,000 million dollars Canada spent on our election would have gone a long way in creating Community Forests. But business as usual in Canada, nothing changed.
In Zambia I am very happy this election is over. Congratulations to President Banda. I look forward to our continual working with you and your Government. Stay the course, poverty reduction and most importantly improved EDUCATION.
In the USA we will have to see what happens today. I would not want the job as President of that shaky land. I think many promises will be broken as reality takes hold. I was listening to a reporter in Kenya so excited about the possibilities of mega help to Kenya when the government changes. I think change will have to start in places like the still devastated New Orleans and the state of the US economy.

My Anniversary

30 Oct 2008 06:47 pm

October 31 is my Wedding Anniversary; I have been married 10 years to Maria. This year is very special because it is the first time in a long while that I am home for the occasion. We were married under a Beech tree in Beacon Hill Park, just around the corner from where we live. Sharing the same date as Halloween has brought many tricks and treats. Maria, would you have still married me if you would have known I would spend half my life in Africa?
