Some Facts About Trees:

24 Jul 2010 10:32 pm

In 50 years one tree recycles more than $37,000 worth of water, provides $31,000 worth of erosion control, $62,000 worth of air pollution control, and produces $37,000 worth of oxygen.
Two mature trees provide enough oxygen for a family of four.
Trees help reduce the "greenhouse effect" by absorbing CO2.
Forest planting is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing CO2. To remove 1 pound of CO2, planting tree costs less than 1 cent, developing more energy efficient appliances costs about 2 1/2 cents, and developing more fuel-efficient cars costs about 10 cents.
By cooling the air and ground around them, the shade from trees helps cool the Earth's temperature.
Trees are good noise barriers, making a city and neighborhood quieter.
Trees help prevent city flooding by catching raindrops and offsetting runoff caused by buildings and parking lots.
Hospital patients heal faster, require shorter stays and fewer painkillers if room windows face trees.
A tree-line buffer between fields and streams helps remove farming pollutants before they reach the water.
Well placed trees help cut energy costs and consumption by decreasing air conditioning costs 10-50% & reducing heating costs as much as 4-22%.
Trees are the longest living and largest living organisms on Earth.
People who plant trees become healthier, better looking, richer, and have more friends (well maybe that's stretching it a bit) - plant a tree and find out!
In deserts, leaves absorb moisture from the dew and frost of the cool nights and release it to cool the air during the warm days.
Trees enhance the aesthetics of our environment. Their grandeur, tenacity, and beauty are probably the most enjoyable aspect of trees.

MAD DOGS and MONEY

05 Feb 2010 02:54 pm

On the 28th night I got a message from Felix telling me one of his boys had been bitten by a mad dog and that he desperately needed money for a series of Rabbi shots. This message came in the middle of the night here in Canada so first thing the next morning I went to Western Union and sent the money needed. We use Western Union to send money because the facilitators can just go to the Post Office and pick it up. Yes it is costly but banks at this time are not an option. Western Union money is sent within 2 hours. Here is where the problem is. The Post Office has no money. Felix has been travelling the 40 kilometres on his bike to pick it up every day but no money. It is now a week! The boy is still waiting for his medicine. Today is Friday and there is still no money in the Post Office. I am now waiting for Felix’s call to see if it has finally arrived.

Carbon Offsets

28 Nov 2009 04:52 pm

What a confused world we live in. I wonder if the dinosaurs went through this just before they became extinct. We will never know one way or the other. But I know this and I am not a scientist or even a smart man but if we do not stop cutting trees down and not replanting them, we are in trouble. Since I am connected to a part of the world that has very little knowledge about what is going on: it is my duty to educate them and help them do their part at correcting our environmental woes. At African Community Project we are helping but far too little. We need more resources to get the word out. I see selling carbon Credits is a means of financing our reforestation and community work. By helping us continue with our work you will also be easing your own carbon foot print.

Moving along!

08 Oct 2009 03:35 pm

It is Thursday morning and I am busy finally moving ahead with a new look to the web site, coming soon. In Zambia the crew is busy with new tree nurseries at different schools. Ryan is in Chipata getting his motor bike repaired. Geoff is working with the Minister of Tourism and Environment for Zambia on a way forward to work with the government. Honorable Minister Catherine Namugala realizes the need to reforest and address global warming. Rob Friberg our forester is getting things moving with our carbon credit program.

Trip to Mumbi

04 Aug 2008 06:58 am

Sunday we travelled to Mumbi Village from Petauke. We have maintained a very active tree nursery there for the past three years. This is Felix our Environment Coordinators home village. It is located south of Petauke toward the Mozambique border on fairly good feeder road.
There are 3500 people living in and around Mumbi and they rely on three wells, one a borehole and two hand dug wells. One of these was a gift from Harbourside Rotary in Victoria and the other has been deepened and maintained by ourselves. The pump had broken down on the bore hole so the two hand dug wells were getting a work out, sometimes even coming up dry at peak times of the day.
After doing our business and visiting with Felix and his wife Charity we loaded the truck with will rotted manure from his Kraal and returned to Petauke. This will be much needed in our nursery planned for the compound for the soil is very sandy. We never even had a flat tire.

Planting

10 Jun 2007 05:42 pm

We are getting ready to plant 5 tons of Jatropha seeds into our nurseries this September. We are harvesting this year but the seeds will all go into seedling production over the next few years.
