Growing!

30 Aug 2009 05:00 pm

Things are moving along at the project. With the use of text messaging I am able to communicate with the project facilitators across Zambia and the country manager in Lusaka. More seeds are being bought from the villagers, an income they have never had before. This will help them out so they will not have to sell their maize crop too early and get poor prices. Our facilitator in Kasama has requested more pine seeds to expand the program there. He has had very good luck growing pine in an area unsuitable for agriculture. Felix has also informed me that they are harvesting Jatropha seeds from trees we planted 3 years ago. Does this mean we are growing? Ryan a returned Peace Corp Volunteer is visiting Petauke where he was stationed and will pop in and see the project. I had met him before at one of our meetings in a village a few years ago.
We are managing on the thinnest of budgets but donations are always needed; perhaps we could plant some trees in your name and you can feel better about your carbon foot print!

Good progress!

21 Aug 2009 08:53 pm

It has been a good week; cameras have been sent to some of the facilitators to record the progress that is being made with the project. Thanks Kathy for the great digital camera you donated; it will to be used by Geoff, he is the African Community Projects Country Manager. Geoff works a full time job but still has time to oversee the projects in the Northern Provinces. This week also saw fencing delivered to a plantation in Mumbi Village where we were having trouble with the village goats. We also received thousands of new pens from www.caaws.ca The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women of Sport and Physical Activity. They will be sent to our projects in Zambia to be given to older students in community schools and the women of the community, thank you.
We also have now perfected a system of text messaging with a cell phone back and forth, saving many days of mailing letters (21 days or more).
All this takes money, mailing, shipping, fencing, wages, seeds and tools; give us an email to see how you can help. africancommunityproject@gmail.com

A new bike!

09 Aug 2009 04:31 pm

I would just like to say “Zikomo kwambiri” (Thank You) to Reed for donating money to buy Felix a new bike to replace the one that was stolen in Petauke. He was collecting used shake/shake beer containers from behind the bars to plant our tree seedlings in. I just hope it is not long until he gets the news and walks the 8 hours into Petauke to get new one and more shake/shake containers.
